This summer we plan to make the most out of hanging @ "Auntie" Helen's pool. It is perfectly heated & no splashers allowed! Austin has been in the pool twice so far and really enjoys floating around in his little boat. I am going to get him a brimmed hat & floaty with a shade soon as the direct sunlight seems to hinder his pool time enjoyment. It is too bad his Trach prevents him from swimming, but maybe next summer? (Well I can hope.)
I can hear the GASPS! from here. I keep it very safe. Austin is safe in someone's arms at all times. The suction machine, ambu bag & telephone are within arms reach and his chest remains above the water line. There is no excess splashing as only one or two other people are in the pool. I repeat, Austin is safe! Trust me it took a lot of courage for me to allow him to get this far.
my daughter is 6 1/2 years old and has a trach, this is her second summer home with us since we adopted her. But I'm terrified to even allow her to get near a pool so we just don't. She's begging tho. How did your kiddo do in the water? any suggestions on how to allow a trach child in a pool?
oh btw, I found your blog on the Facebook Trach group...nice to see other parents of trach kids!
Austin did great in the water. I bought him a different floaty that I have not posted yet and he did even better this time than last time. My best suggestion is do what you feel comfortable with. If you are too nervous then please wait, your LO will feel that and anxiety in the pool with kids is enough, but with a Trach...well, you know. A few things that worked for us: He only goes in the pool with adults so there is no splashing and everyone understands that. With kids it may be hard to enforce that unless you have special powers ;) I also took in a few of his bath toys so he would feel comfortable floating around holding those. He is only in the floaty and only about to where his rib cage is. He is still young so I think he is cool with this setup for now because he doesn't know any better, not sure how much a 6yo might be willing to restrain herself. Also I should note he gets more wet in the bathtub than the pool, his hair basically stays dry!!The nurse, suction machine & phone are all nearby. Good luck and let us know how she does.
Just found your site, while looking at another. I am awed by what you do for Austin. You are a single mom who depends on herself and does what is right for your child. I am also in awe that you are letting Austin experience life(pool, etc). I am a single parent of a child with Down Syndrome and her issues are nothing compared to Austin. Again, continue your love story with Austin.

It looks like Austin had good times in his Aunties pool. I can appreciate having the ambu bag, suction machine and the telephone within arms reach(:
