Walking & Talking

A few weeks ago Austin's PT arrived with his first "loaner" walker. No sooner did we have his shoes on and he was OFF! We took her for a spin outside and while off-roading in the garden Austin promptly said his first clear word: flower. It said it as if he had been speaking his whole life. He has known the ASL sign for flower for months and now clear as day he is saying it out loud. AMAZING! So a very big day indeed! We got some great video of him and his walker. A few days later I realized that he was sort of hunched over the walker using his arms to push it and his feet to follow. I discussed this with his Physical Therapist.

Once it was clear he just need the motivation his Cherry Red walker was replaced by Old Faithful. Old Faithful is a posterior walker that forces Austin to stand upright and pull the walker behind him. Where Cherry Red was sleek, cute & easy to maneuver; Old Faithful is sturdy, kinda ugly and BIG, but she gets the job done.
