{Mis}adventures in Potty Training

Let The Countdown Begin!

With 30 days to go until Austin's 2nd Birthday I have been manipulated decided to give potty training a try. The Huggies & Pampers people made me do it! Seriously, I keep getting emails and promotional brochures in the mail with coupons that are not for diapers. I guess in mainstream medialand ALL almost 2 year olds need to be thinking of PT these days and moving out of diapers.

No, you don't buy that?

Okay, the REAL reason I am giving this a try is because Austin likes to remove his diaper if given the option. Allow me to sidetrack for a moment if you will. Austin has "issues" with fondling.

Yup, you read it here first, the boy likes to fondle his Mic-Key. No, that is not "code" for boy parts. He likes to tug, pull and twist at his G-tube button, so for that reason it is best to keep him in Onsies. When you twist, tug and pull mercilessly at a Mic-Key button it causes some very, not nice things to happen to your tummy involving things like stomach acid and granulation tissue and no one wants that.

"Medically" speaking I, Dr. Mom, decided that he MUST wear a Onsie to prevent easy access. It's not because I love body shirts and WANT to keep buying them well into his teen years. It is simply because I do not want to deal with the aforementioned ugliness. Which believe it or not, can get really nasty and require surgical intervention in some cases. No, thanks! Austin has been lucky enough to have had only one small bout with GT and it has been under control for about 15 months, I would like to keep it that way.

So that said, I recently trialed Austin without the Onsie a few days to see if his Mic-Key compulsion was under control. He ran around in only a diaper while at home. It required some extra vigilance & monitoring to protect that button, but for the most part he did leave it alone. On the flip side, he did take a liking to removing his diaper. So I am taking his new found obsession as an indication of potty training readiness.

I have done my research and I believe if the stars align properly for the next few {dare I say} days, weeks, months we shall make this happen. He tries to help putting on the "training pants" so that is a plus. He has the language part down; he knows the signs for Potty, Cold, Diaper, All Done, Water, Sit, Time, Wait, More, Please, Thank you...and most importantly he loves getting stickers! I am going forward on the premise that he will PT like a typical toddler.

We've had the potty introductions, as you can see it went well once he figured out which end went where.

Is there anything else I should know?

All I have to say is WOW if Austin really does get the hang of it. At 3 1/2 Ayden just pooped in the potty for the first time today, until now, he might pee in the potty. We have kept it casual, but he just doesn't have the hang of "holding it".
Since he is so young, keep it positive... If Ayden doesn't go, we tell him nice try, let's try again later.
As for the g-tube, I am so glad Ayden doesn't have a fetish w/ his - only if he doesn't have a shirt on does he notice it, so we just keep a shirt on at all times. (we also still tape it down).
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

Best of luck with the PT training. It took me a long time to pt my (typical) daughter. We had the potty movie, the musical potty, the potty doll, the potty book, but one day SHE decided when she was done with the diapers. That's how it goes sometimes:)

I'm with you there with the g-tube pulling. We have to keep those hand occupied with the toys usually.

I'm Going!!
