I'd Like The Non-Smoking Section, Please

If we did not have Nursing care I am not sure what I would write about folks.  So far this year we have dealt with The Nurse who I wanted to duked it out with while Austin was in the hospital on New Years Eve, The Pointy Nurse, The Choking Nurse , the Nurse who said Austin was too violent (trust me that was a doozy), and now we have the newbie Nurse who asked ME a very dumb question. Yes, that was a long sentence, but it has been an equally long year.

"I'm not sure how to ask this, but...well...I'm a smoker. Can I smoke after the baby goes to bed?"

I had a two-word answer. "Absolutely NOT!" Then I added a few hundred more words and went into a 10-minute speech on the evils of Smoking. I guess that'll teach her.

Light drawing

I know most of you will be shocked that I did not toss her out, but I explained "The Rules". She agreed to them, so we are good for now.

The Rules:

  • No Smoking whatsoever on the premises, ie: There will be No "breaks" for Smoking, No "let me just Smoke outside" and No "let me just crack open this window and stick my arm out".
  • Don't wear any clothing to work that has been smoked in and not washed ie: Don't smoke in the car on the way over and expect to keep your shift.
  • If she cannot stop herself from Smoking for 8 hours, three days a week then this is not the job for her. She can work on destroying her OWN lungs on her own time.

So all of this discussion this begs the question: When she read Austin's medical chart what part of Chronic Lung Disease did she not understand? Or do you think maybe she saw our snazzy oxygen cart and wanted one of her own in a few years? Perhaps the idea of being hooked up to Oxygen while you sleep is enticing to her who knows?

Truthfully I have never been really fond of being in the presence of cigarette smoke or Smokers even before Austin came along. But now it is a non issue. Smoking in his presence is OUT.OF.THE.QUESTION. There are plenty of statistics on the health effects of second hand smoke on children and as you can imagine smoking near a child with a Trach (direct access to the lungs) and chronic lung disease does not mix, to put it mildly.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to to NOT add any other Specialists or medical issues like asthma, heart disease or lung cancer to my 2 year olds already packed medical resume.

Do you allow smoking around your children?

Yes this...and you know I really could rant on this. It amazes me that somehow you lose the ability to realize that you stink and everyone can smell you...when you smoke (in particular in your home or car).

We don't deal with nursing..but "fired" the head start teacher that came into my house reeking of cigg smoke and gave me books I was supposed to hand to my son...covered in it.

Just this Saturday...Corianne had a little friend over. First time. I insisted that it be at our home...because I didn't know if they smoked or not...they do. So when it was time for her to go...she commented that "when, ha ha" Corianne goes to there house...they will be sure not to smoke inside....so she won't be covered in smoke. Really where do the brain cells go....my daughter would come home stinking of it, whether you smoke while she's there or not, let alone she'd have it all over her...ick.

okay rant over.

Ah... yes... we once had a nurse as for a smoke break. It didn't go over very well.

Good Grief!! My jaw hit the floor reading that!!

This is a NURSE for petes sake!!???

How could she even CONSIDER asking if she could smoke around a child with lung disease and a trach (or ANY CHILD!!)

Ugh.

obscene.

Glad she agreed to the 'rules' - hope that's the last of that discussion.

wow.

No smoking allowed anywhere near my children, especially my daughter who is allergic to it and who also has lung issues.

I hate when we go shopping and the smokers are all huddled outside the building. I grab her and run past them.

What makes me furious is when people come up to my home with a cig in their hand. I have had delivery men, city workers, etc, knock on my door while smoking.

It's amazing just how much we have to deal with this!

My biggest pet peeve is when you are driving and you look over and you see parents smoking away with their children in the car with them.

Gross....Gross....Gross!

I feel bad you have been having a bad run of nurses lately!

Hugs,
Lisa

She would have been fired for even asking I dont think I could trust that nurse I would have questioned her ability to take care of anyone period. but thats just me

Both my husband and I don't allow smoking in our home or near it and we will say something to someone who tries to smoke infront of our kids.

Several things make me very much hate smoking.
1) I watched my daddy die of lung cancer from smoking 3 pack of cigarettes a day. I would love for those who smoke sit with a man dying from smoking (cancer) and see if it is really worth another puff of a cigarette.

2)I have twins who were born at 29 weeks. No lung issues with them, I have drilled into them already why you shouldn't smoke. My DD already says that she hates it because it killed her grandpa.

They have gone up to a person smoking and told them that they were yucky and disusting for smoking. The person gave me a dirty look... I was like. well can't argue when they are telling the truth.

No smoking around my children either!
Can't even stand it. Never could. Can't even believe that the nurse asked such a ridiculous question. Hopefully she felt really bad afterward!

OMFG! I cannot believe the nurse asked you that! I mean, I can see it IF your child didn't have chronic lung disease, but seeing as she was assigned to be the nurse of a child with chronic lung disease I think that should have been a requirement....A NON SMOKER from the place that you get the nurse from.

I'd say you handled it well, I would have tossed her out on her ass LOL.

Um, yeah, no way. Luckily we don't have anyone around us who smokes, so my daughter really isn't exposed to it at all. I hate when I'm at the store or somewhere, though, and the person behind me reeks of smoke. I cannot stand the smell and I will try my hardest to get out of there as soon as possible.

We've had a couple of nurses come smelling smokey and that doesn't fly with me. One nurse didn't smell smokey for the 3 weeks we used her and then one day I came home and she *reeked* so I know she must have smoked while she was on duty. I didn't let her com back. I'm not super strict about Adrian because he doesn't have all the problems, but I'm much more careful with Charlie. My mom smokes but never around anyone else but I have to admit that if she has a little smoke smell on her clothes I don't tell her to change. If she smelled strongly of smoke I would, but she never does.
